A court in New Zealand has sentenced, on Thursday 27th August 2020, a self-confessed white supremacist who killed 51 Muslims as they prayed at two mosques in Christchurch in March 2019, to life imprisonment without parole, the first time such a sentence has been handed down in the country.
In this regard, the Council of European Muslims (CEM) hails the great efforts made by the New Zealand security services to achieve justice to the victims and their families.
On this occasion, the CEM renews calls on all European states to redouble their efforts when it comes to introducing legislation that will criminalise Islamophobic practices in all their forms.
